Reflection on photography essay

Photographic document are central to our culture and we all have a sense of what they look like and what they do. A great deal of our information about our world comes from these images and all manner of specialist professions employ photographic document in their work. Photography slotted neatly into the new vision of objective observation. Throughout history the camera has repeatedly been seen as an objective machine that captures information without interference from the artist. Photography has the power to fix a particular interpretation of the events, objects or people depicted. Another way photography is used in the service of professional authority is drawn from the encounter between western colonizers and the colonized peoples. The photographic document was one means through which the colonized powers envisaged their difference from their colonized subjects.
This article relates to our projects because we have to take pictures to document our progress just like you would in a business setting. We also had to take pictures of our word on site so we can visually document our site and show others, and to give reasoning as to why we picked that location as our word site.

Reflections of different parts of the project

With this project I learn how to not only build a 3 foot tall word, I learned how to build it while at the same time make it in a way that the viewer can also see the definition. I learn how to make a word portray its actual meaning through the creativity of discussing what the word means, when we use it, and the most common place we actually “ Obtain” something. With the word obtain we first saw this as difficult to find a way to portray the definition in a location that we most likely obtain something.

Written Reflection of team Dynamics

At first we had the idea of cutting out our words from cardboard like everyone else. Instead of trying to make a 3-D shape out of it we wanted to try filling the empty space with paper wads and insulation foam. At first this idea seemed very creative and worth trying. While in the process we found that this was instead very messy. The foam was bulging out of the edge of the letters give it not a very clean look. After this we decided we needed to start over. We thought it would be easier to connect the letters together instead of actually cutting out each one. This idea lead to us wanting our word to be made into a box. We cut out our letters in two long cardboard sheets. Making the holds inside with tape and being precise on how to make sure this stands up and doesn’t fall apart. We then had the idea of placing the cut out letters inside the box giving the actual meaning of obtain by making look like the box is obtaining the word.
When discussing color we came across the struggle of how we were going to give our word color without having the paint warp our box. So this lead to us discussing locations. We decided we wanted it to be outside with the leaves and so instead of painting our letters we glued leaves on them which I found to be more attractive than actually painting them, and it also didn’t leave our letters warped.

Written reflection on how your word construction, placement, photos contribute to the meaning of the word.

The construction of our word contributed to the meaning of obtain because we made a box cut out of the word. Instead of throwing away the extra letters we cut out, we placed them inside coming to the conclusion that it went with the definition because it looked like the box was obtaining the letters. We spray glued leaves on the inside cutouts of the letters because we were putting our word out by the leaves with a rake being placed on it to give the illusion of raking leaves. This shows obtain because when you rake leaves you actually obtain them. We took pictures by many different trees around campus. We needed the tree’s because under them were pile of leaves we needed to show the meaning of obtaining leaves.
